According to the WHO or World Health Organization, cataracts is the number one cause of blindness around the world. This organization is a top source of statistics and information about visual impairment. In 2002, there were over 161 million visually impaired individuals. Out of that number, 124 are considered visually impaired but not blind while 37 million are legally blind. There are a variety of organizations devoted to the visually impaired, including Prevent Blindness America. This volunteer organization has been providing education about eye safety and health since 1908. Their mission is to prevent visual loss and preserve eyesight. Based in Chicago, Illinois but active all over the country, PBA works hard to help the residents of the United States see clearly. They do this in a variety of different ways and strive to bring awareness to the importance of vision insurance coverage and regular eye exams.
