Texas School For The Blind

The Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, abbreviated TSBVI, is a public school for placement of students with impaired vision. This facility serves as a state resource for parent and teachers of blind children. This school accepts students between the ages of 6 and 21 years of age who are blind, visually impaired, deaf, or deaf and blind. Also students with other disabilities or disabilities in addition to blindness may be considered for attendance at this school.

This school, located in Austin, offers a variety of programs to meet the needs of many students and their parents. First are the comprehensive programs. These programs are ones in which students live at the school and attend classes on a full time basis. For students who attend a different school but also need the services of TSBVI there are special programs. There are summer classes and other classes for students seeking short term education. Whether you need summer school, classes a few times a week or some other form of learning this facility may be able to accommodate you.

TSBVI also has a PSP or post secondary program. It is a collaboration between the Division for Blind Services and the school itself. The post secondary program is for students aged between 18 and 22 years who have a high school diploma or GED. This program teaches these students to function in the outside world in an environment that is educational and supportive. These students learn to enter the community through apartment life, volunteer experience and even work experience. When students leave this program they are functional adults who can deal adequately with their disability and be contributing members of their community.

The Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is a valuable educational facility for parents and students. If your child has visual impairment, blindness, is deaf, or is blind and deaf they may qualify for attendance at this school. The staff can walk you through every step of the admissions process and help you choose the program that best suits your child. You will find that with the support and education provided by this school you and your child can reach a new level of confidence and independence.
