Temporary Blindness
The condition known as temporary blindness is one in which sight is lost then restored. If you experience an episode of this type, don't brush it off as nothing. Seek immediate medical attention at the nearest emergency room. While it may not seem serious, it very well could be. The artery that transports blood to your brain and eye is called the corroded artery. When plaques occur in this artery it causes atherosclerotic vascular disease. The plaques can actually break free from your artery and get in your eye, causing blindness that can last anywhere from a few seconds to an entire day. Needless to say this can be very frightening to the person experiencing this type of vision impairment.
If you have experienced fleeting blindness do not drive yourself to the doctor or hospital. Call 911 or have someone drive you for emergency care. The last thing you want is to have a reoccurrence of the incident while driving. Not only that, but temporary loss of vision due to atherosclerotic vascular disease may be a warning signal of a condition that could be life threatening such as a stroke. This is not just the case for temporary vision loss but any kind of vision loss or disturbance. While not every incident is a stroke warning sign all should be taken seriously and seen by a doctor immediately.
In addition to atherosclerotic vascular disease, vision loss or disturbance may also be caused by glaucoma, injury to the eye or detachment of the retina. Even cardiac embolism or aortic dissection may lead to temporary loss of vision. These are all dangerous conditions that can take your life if not treated immediately. When seeking treatment for temporary vision loss make sure to tell the doctor when the incident occurred, any symptoms that accompanied the incident and any other information you feel is important.
The emergency doctor will evaluate your condition to see if it is at a life threatening stage. The job of an emergency room doctor includes stabilizing the patient and evaluating the severity and risk of the medical problem being presented. If your condition is life threatening you will probably be admitted to the hospital right away, if it is not you will be referred to your primary care physician or eye doctor depending on the cause or suspected cause of the problem.
