Prevent Blindness America
There are a variety of organizations devoted to the visually impaired, including Prevent Blindness America. This volunteer organization has been providing education about eye safety and health since 1908. Their mission is to prevent visual loss and preserve eyesight. Based in Chicago, Illinois but active all over the country, PBA works hard to help the residents of the United States see clearly. They do this in a variety of different ways and strive to bring awareness to the importance of vision insurance coverage and regular eye exams.
PBA provides vision screening for millions of youngsters and adults every year. Preschoolers with amblyopia (lazy eye) can be helped and vision loss can be prevented thanks to early detection. School age children need good eyesight to learn properly, which is why screening is so important for them. Even adults need help because of the risk of glaucoma, cataracts and AMD or age related macular degeneration. Many people don't know the importance of annual eye exams or do not have vision insurance coverage and cannot afford to pay for their exams out of pocket. Because of this there are both children and adults suffering from unnecessary vision problems.
Also, PBA helps spread information about ocular health through the distribution of fact sheets, brochures, public service announcements and even the Internet. It is estimated that 120 million individuals are exposed to a message by the PBA which tells them about the importance of detecting vision problems early to prevent sight loss. Also, this organization works closely with the government at every level to help improve health policies for the public regarding vision. Grassroots campaigns like those conducted by PBA can be very effective in bringing federal, state and local attention and assistance to health programs of all kinds.
Prevent Blindness America trains vision screening professionals and instructors for their duties in the only program of this type in the country. More than 20,000 personnel members have been trained to help the residents of their community obtain and maintain better eyesight. They have a website where you can learn more about their accomplishments, services and how you can get involved. By donating your time or money to an organization like PBA you can feel good about helping children and adults with important vision related issues.
