Monocular Blindness
The term monocular blindness can best be summed up in layman's terms as blindness in one eye. The leading cause of this condition in otherwise healthy adults is injury. There are many different types of injuries that may cause vision loss. When working with metal, wood, welding or doing other such tasks you should always wear safety goggles because they can mean the difference between being blinded by a piece of flying debris to retaining your eyesight.
In addition to being injured on the job, being poked in the eye with great force or a severe scratch to the cornea may lead to blindness in one eye also. Sometimes, the problem may result from an infection of the eye, especially one that is left untreated. Becoming blind in one eye can be a difficult thing to deal with, but you should know that not every case is permanent. In today's high-tech world there are all kind of medical and surgical procedures and treatments that can improve this condition.
There are different degrees of blindness. Total blindness means a person cannot see anything and cannot distinguish between light and dark. Some blind individuals can tell light from dark but can see nothing else. Others can see, although so poorly they are classified as legally blind. Many people are unaware that there are different degrees of blindness and this is the case whether or not you have trouble with both eyes or just one. In order to diagnose the condition of and the prognosis for blindness in one eye you should seek prompt medical attention. If your blindness has occurred due to injury emergency medical treatment should be obtained immediately following the injury.
After your condition is stabilized and you are no longer in any immediate medical danger, schedule an appointment with your eye doctor as soon as possible for a thorough exam. Not only can they tell you more about the cause of your problem, they can discuss with you the various treatment strategies available to you. Whether your monocular blindness requires surgery, medication or no treatment at all depends on its cause and severity. If your vision loss is significant enough to affect your life consider seeking help from an association for the blind who provides education and support.
