Council For The Blind

If you are wondering whether or not there is some kind of council for the blind, you will be glad to know there are numerous national, state and local organizations designed to provide education, advocacy, resources and support for the blind and visually impaired. For example, the American Council of the Blind is one such organization. The ACB as it is commonly abbreviated provides up to the minute news and other resources for the visually impaired. They help those with vision loss maintain as much independence as they can.

One of the most well known national organizations is the American Foundation for the Blind. This nonprofit organization is headquartered in New York City and also has a Public Policy Center in DC. In addition, the AFB has offices in Dallas, Atlanta, West Virginia and San Francisco. They work to provide tools to those with loss of vision and help promote independence and health for the blind and their loved ones. This organization also houses the Helen Keller Archives. These archives help to honor the vast contributions Ms. Keller made during her 40 years of work with this facility.

Another national organization is the NFB or National Federation of the Blind. There are over 50,000 members of this facility and helps to encourage self-confidence and independent living. They do this through education, development of new technology and advocacy. This organization developed the Jernigan Institute, a training and research center created for the blind and led by the blind. This organization has representatives in all 50 states in addition to Puerto Rico and Washington D.C. Seven hundred local chapters mean there is likely one near you. You can contact the main office to find a location in your area.

Joining a council for the blind or another supportive organization can be a big step in maintaining independence and developing coping strategies. Visual impairment can be difficult to deal with especially for those who are newly blind. Even for those born with vision problems, special education and skills are necessary in order to succeed and become contributing members of society. The many organizations available for the visually impaired can help both the visually impaired and their families cope better with the challenges and obstacles they may face.
