Cause Of Blindness
According to the WHO or World Health Organization, cataracts is the number one cause of blindness around the world. This organization is a top source of statistics and information about visual impairment. In 2002, there were over 161 million visually impaired individuals. Out of that number, 124 are considered visually impaired but not blind while 37 million are legally blind. This refers to individuals who may or may not be able to discern changes in light but nothing else.
The reasons for blindness often depend on the location and the demographic being evaluated. By age, more than 80 percent of people over 50 have some kind of visual impairment. Surprisingly this age group represents less than 20 percent of the global population. The WHO states that there are approximately 1.4 million blind youngsters under the age of 15. This is a large number that many nonprofit organizations are working hard to lower through advocacy, education, screening and treatment. Just as age plays a factor, gender might as well. There is a slightly larger number of blind females than males in the world.
When looking at blindness causes one may want to examine the link between this condition and third world countries. It is estimated that as many as 90 percent of the individuals with vision problems live in developing areas. This is because a great many cases of vision impairment or loss in these countries are due to problems that could be easily detected and treated in a country like the United States. Parasitic infection and malnutrition, when left untreated, may play a role in third world blindness. Also people of all ages in these countries are susceptible to other potentially treatable conditions that may progress to full vision loss.
Other things to consider as the cause of blindness are conditions like diabetes and glaucoma. If you need to learn more about visual impairment, speak to your eye doctor or do some Internet research. There is a great deal of information about the condition of blindness online, as well as information about organizations that work to help those in the United States and around the world prevent the condition of blindness and improve their eyesight. Regardless of the cause, any eyesight disturbances should be examined by a physician or eye doctor to diagnose why it is occurring.
