Blindness Symptoms
There are different kinds of blindness, including total blindness where nothing can be detected, blindness where light can be determined from dark, and blindness where certain shapes, colors and forms can be detected but the individual is still considered legally blind. While some people are born blind, others develop their condition later in life. There are blindness symptoms you should be aware of and seek treatment for if you experience any of them. Although sudden and/or temporary blindness can strike for various reasons, in many cases the onset is gradual.
Symptoms may include gradually worsening vision, blurring of eyesight, floaters in front of your field of vision and even eye pain. If you experience any of these or other vision related symptoms you should see your doctor immediately. Whether or not the situation is an emergency depends upon how it occurs. If you become stricken with sudden blindness that lasts for any duration, seek emergency medical care as the cause may be cardiological or neurological. However if you do not experience sudden blindness but rather a gradual decline in vision you may just want to schedule an eye exam.
During your eye exam, your optometrist will perform a series of tests to check every aspect of your vision and eye health. This will include the standard eye chart test in addition to high tech screenings that use state of the art equipment. One common part of the standard eye exam is to dilate the pupils with a yellow drops. These drops may make your eyes very sensitive to light and you will need to wear sunglasses when leaving the appointment. Of course this side effect will subside within an hour or two if not sooner.
Blindness symptoms can range from life threatening to benign. Sometimes it can be hard to discern the two which is why medical intervention is so important. As mentioned earlier any sudden disturbances in vision should be examined immediately to rule out dangerous medical conditions like stroke or heart disease. Gradual vision deterioration should be brought to the attention of your optometrist at your next eye exam. If you feel your vision has worsened in a short period of time it may be wise to schedule a checkup as soon as possible, even if you aren't yet due for one.
