Blind Students

There are a great deal of resources in the U.S. for blind students. One is the National Association of Blind Students. This association, known as NABS, has been providing information and support to blind students attending college or a university. They help students overcome stereotypical and/or negative reactions to their condition from other students or even school personnel. This organization also helps students attending traditional schools find new ways of completing various assignments.

In addition to this association there are schools all over the country for blind students of all ages. Most welcome blind, deaf and deaf-blind students from elementary to high school age and beyond. Some, like the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, have programs for graduates who are in college or preparing for college. Of course you don't have to live in Texas to get a good education because there are accredited and acclaimed schools all over the country. In most every state there are one or more than one school especially made for these types of students.

Even NASA plays a role in developing new technology for students dealing with visual impairment or total vision loss. At the Johnson Space Center in Houston, the Learning Technologies Team is hard at work on a variety of computerized programs and tools for these students and the teachers who educate them. Their IAL or Information Accessibility Lab is not a place, but a type of software which gives students an alternate way of accessing science and math content which requires visual display. Although this tool is made for blind students it can be used be those with sight as a new way of learning scientific and mathematic concepts.

Another innovation for blind students and blind adults is the Mygo cane. Actually designed by a German student named Sebastian Ritzler, this cane uses a sensor and camera to actually measure the ground underneath and provide the user with feedback in real time through a wireless head set. The cane features a wheel that has an engine for steering. The steering is done by feedback provided to the user through the hand grip. This cane is made to be water resistant and fairly affordable. It is just one of the many exciting developments for students and others dealing with vision impairment.
