Being Blind

If you have recently lost the sense of sight you may find yourself in a slightly differnt world or that the whole world has changed. Many people who have been blind since birth have easily adjusted to their condition. However being blind can be a huge adjustment for individuals who lose their sight during their childhood, teen years or adulthood. Luckily there are plenty of resources out there for blind individuals who need help dealing with their vision problems. The first thing you should do if you are having vision problems is see your eye doctor.

For those who have an established medical condition like blindness that cannot necessarily be cured but must be dealt with in other ways, the main course of action should be seeking support. In addition to local organizations to help blind community members there are national organizations as well, such as the National Federation for the Blind and the American Foundation for the Blind. These organizations help educate the public about blindness and also help blind individuals adjust to their condition.

Some blind individuals may need assistance with getting around. There are things like long canes that can help them feel for obstacles in their path. In addition, there are seeing eye dogs trained from a very young age to guide the visually impaired and help them retain their independence. There are even high-tech glasses being developed which help the blind navigate their environment. The aforementioned organizations as well as local ones can help you find the appropriate assistance for your needs. Even joining a social organization for the blind can be of help because you can learn coping strategies from others going through the same situation.

One thing you should know is that being blind is not a death sentence. Many blind people are able to enjoy rich, full lives and use their other senses to the fullest. There are different kinds of blindness, ranging from the legally blind who may be able to discern light, color and shape to the totally blind who cannot tell light from dark. No matter what kind of blindness you or a loved one have you should never give up hope of new technology to cure the problem. Nor should you neglect your need for emotional support and resources that various nonprofit organizations can provide.
